overview
Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, Daiyuzan Shounji Temple.
Shounji Temple was founded in 1610 (Keicho 15) in Kawabe, Yashima-machi, Yurihonjo City, by Zenrinji Temple’s 14th head monk, Shinno Zentatsu, in what is now Innai, Nikaho City. In 1695 (Genroku 9), the temple was relocated to its current location, where it stands to this day.
Since the head priest was from Shonai at the time of the Boshin War, the graves of two Shonai clan Shinseitai fighters are located on the temple grounds.
