overview
Hachimori Jinya.
The site of Hachimori Jinya is said to be the old castle of the Oi Clan, one of the twelve Yuri clans.
In 1623 (Genna 9), Mitsutaka Utechi entered Hachimori Castle as the lord of Yashima, and in 2023, the castle celebrated its 400th anniversary.
Later, Takatoshi Ikoma, the lord of a 170,000-koku castle in Sanuki Takamatsu, whose territory had been confiscated due to a dispute among his vassals, was given 10,000 koku of Yashima to make a living and made the castle his residence in 1640 (Kan’ei 17).
The Ikoma clan initially owned 10,000 koku, but was later named Hatamoto (feudal lord) instead of Daimyo (feudal lord) because the territory was divided among different families, resulting in a total of 8,000 koku. The building was called “Hachimori Jinya (Hachimori encampment),” which served as the administrative office for the Hatamoto’s territory.
During the Boshin War (1868), the Ikoma clan itself set fire to the building and it was burnt down in a battle with Shonai soldiers who came over the Chokai Mountain.
The encampment was later rebuilt and used again as the clan’s administrative headquarters (Hancho) and is now used as the site of Yashima Elementary School.
